Course Requirements - Grades K-12 Basic and Adult Secondary Programs

PURPOSE:

To revise course requirements for courses contained in the “2020-2021 Course Code Directory and Instructional Personnel Assignments” for Grades K-12/Adult, Basic Education. The effect will add the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics and remove the Language Arts (LAFS) and mathematics (MAFS) Florida Standards from non-ELA and non-mathematics subject area courses as appropriate. Additionally, K-12 ELA and K-12 mathematics course descriptions that include the B.E.S.T. Standards will be adopted.

SUMMARY:

On July 15, 2020, revisions to the B.E.S.T. Standards for ELA and mathematics were adopted by the State Board of Education. With the adoption of revised standards, course descriptions need to be updated to include the most current standards. The rule amendment will remove the LAFS and MAFS and add the B.E.S.T. Standards to 851 non-ELA and non-mathematics subject area courses. The rule amendment will also adopt 57 revised English Language Arts and 28 mathematics (24 revised and 4 new) course descriptions that include the revised B.E.S.T. Standards.
