Bag and Vessel Limits

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this rule development is to reduce shrimp waste for commercial live bait shrimp harvesters in Nassau and Duval counties. The effect of this change would be to increase the dead shrimp allowance for inshore commercial live bait harvesters in Nassau and Duval counties.

SUMMARY:

This proposed rule would increase the dead shrimp allowance for commercial live bait shrimp harvesters in Nassau and Duval counties from one gallon per trip to five gallons per trip. This would make the dead shrimp allowance for commercial live bait shrimp harvesters consistent statewide.

Commercial live bait harvesters are required to keep their catch alive through the point of sale. In the process of harvesting, some shrimp do not survive. The rules limit how many dead shrimp these commercial live bait harvesters can keep, which is referred to as the “dead shrimp allowance.” Any shrimp in excess of the dead shrimp allowance must be discarded. Thus, increasing the dead shrimp allowance for commercial live bait harvesters in Nassau and Duval counties to match the rest of the state would reduce resource waste for harvesters operating in those counties.
